2 heads red cabbage - shredded
½ cup margarine
1 cup vinegar
1 apple or a couple tbsp applesauce
1 cup sugar
½ cup current syrup or ¼ cup grape jelly
Melt margarine in large pot; add shredded cabbage, vinegar, apple and syrup/jelly. Simmer for 2 hours, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
There is a very strong, distinct smell while the red cabbage is cooking. For most Danes, this smell conjures up feelings similar to those most of us have when we smell fresh bread baking. A very warm and cozy feeling.
