The Story of Lilli Sorensen (née Nakskov)

Lilli Nakskov's first Mount Royal employer was an elderly widow, a demanding and autocratic semi-invalid.

No Smoking
Smoking was not allowed on the property. Lilli was not a smoker but the cook was. The two got along just fine. When the cook went outside for a smoke, Lilli stood guard on the back porch.

Curfew
Lilli had a strict curfew, which she thought ridiculous. One night she was late and had to sneak up to her room on the third floor. She took off her shoes and tiptoed up the darkened stairs.

When she reached the second landing, the lights blazed on and she was confronted by a horrible spectre draped in white. It shook its dishevelled head and waved an alarm clock in Lilli’s face!

Lilli thought it was a ghost and almost fell backwards down the stairs.

Then the spectre spoke: Do you know what time it is?

Lilli replied: Of course I do––I have my own watch and I am not dumb!

Then Lilli calmly brushed past the old woman and continued to her room.

Spring Chickens
Lilli's fiancé, Ingeman, was working on a farm for room and board. He and his friends were always looking for ways to make money. They bought the farmer’s old hens, butchered and plucked them and sold them door-to-door in Calgary as "spring chickens". Naturally, he came to the house where Lilli worked.

The cook bought two "spring chickens". After hours of cooking, they were still tough. The old woman haughtily informed Lilli that her friend from Standard need not come around peddling “spring chickens” again.

I Promised Your Father
To prevent Lilly from leaving, the old woman said that she's promised Lilli's father in Denmark that she'd look after his daughter. Lilli knew it was nonsense and told her so. Shortly after that, Lilly left!
