Flying to Canada in the 1940s and 1950s

Print PDF

Air travel was very expensive in the early days and Danish immigrants seldom arrived at Canadian airports. But when time was a critical factor, possessions were sold to finance the journey. For some, the trip was their first flight.

The Adelborg Family (1957)
"My mum and dad ... had just bought new furniture for their home but had to sell it all for ticket money. In July, 1957 my dad flew to Victoria, B.C. Our sponsor picked him up and took him to Duncan."

Lilly Christensen (1955)
"She arrived at Calgary airport where Per greeted her and picked her up in his new car, a panel station wagon. Lilly observed that the airport had a meager shed for a building."
